Behind the Scenes

FBY is a modern approach to the ancient art and science of yoga for the next generation of urban yogis. The FBY mission is to clear the mystique around yoga by providing an accessible and fun approach for all levels, ranging from yoga virgins to seasoned pros.

After working in PR, advertising and music, Jessica decided to combine her passions by creating Fat Buddha Yoga in 2012. Believing strongly in the unique health benefits of yoga, and feeling a need to mix up her yoga routine, Jessica created FBY. It is her answer to affordable yoga in special locations with cool music; yoga done a little differently. Jessica is also an international DJ, having played around Europe supporting artists that include Tensnake, Joey Negro, Rich Medina, Tough Love and Him_Self_Her. She combines well her love for music with her yoga practice; the rooftop yoga sessions are accompanied by soundtracks mixed by her classes. Check out some of her mixes here.

Our Experience

In the heart of Shoreditch, the Black and White Building hosted us for FBY’s ‘Fire’ class, which promised ‘fiery warm-up of sun salutations, creative fast and strong sequences, core-work, practicing and playing with arm balances, inversions and sweat’.

Through the black gates and into the reception, we were greeted by FBY founder, and our instructor, Jessica.  We were checked into class, given our yoga mat and block and directed up the stairs to a gorgeous wooden deck on a roof terrace. Jessica settled us into the class with a gentle set of sun salutations, appropriately accompanied by her chilled Fat Buddha mixes and the setting of the sun around us.  The buzz from the hustle and bustle of Shoreditch around us dissolved as we pushed back into our downward dogs. By the time we had reached play time with arm balances and inversions, the core-engaging beginning series had warmed our muscles enough to enjoy the cooling rooftop breeze. Providing constant alignment guidance and effortless demonstrations for the inversions, Jessica catered for all levels as she guided us through the class. Our final relaxing pose, Savasana, was a blissful meditation to close the session, and our thoughts were guided to the present moment by the music.

Why it Works

Fat Buddha Yoga combines a fun, invigorating class with fabulous music and a laid back vibe. Whether you are brand new to the scene or a seasoned  yogi, there’s something for everyone in Jessica’s classes. And at an affordable price that won’t break the bank.  Awesome.
